The rain the region got was greatly prized, but with it also came dangers. Mudslides could be sudden and deadly, as the ground on the slope liquidated and flowed. Nightlight and Corazon had been in the area when they had received the call that any doctors and any helping hands were needed in a remote village in the Mireh hills.
A flyer had been leaving from the town they were in only to be put back down, passengers kicked off, and aid supplies and personnel onboarded. It was a tense flight over the rolling hills below, golden grasses turned green in places from the rainstorm that had just passed through as it triggered new growth. It was unnaturally flat to Nightlight, compared to the mountains xe was used to, but what filled xir thoughts was worry rather than discomfort.
"Do you think anyone got hurt?" xe asked Corazon as the flyer whined it's way towards the village.
"Hopefully not. But…"
They both knew what that 'but' led too, as the flyer bumped down and everyone began to jump out. Nightlight felt xir heart sink as xe took in the scene; the village had been on a hill, and much of the buildings had slid. Xe exchanged a look with Corazon as they made their way to what appeared to be a medical area. It didn't seem likely that there would be no injuries with this sort of devastation...
They joined in the chaos, trying to sort the injured. It was a dirty job, both in morals and blood and grime, trying to debate whose pain should be tended first. Corazon, knowing more about the machines the villagers had been able to extract from the now structurally unsound doctor's office, had started assisting the doctor in using them on the most injured patients.
Nightlight was dealing with people running in with the injured, telling them to put someone here or there… trying to tell what was shock and what was a head injury at a glance. It was stressful, knowing that if xe messed up, someone could die… but the other things xe could do didn't seem any less nerve-wracking.
Corazon was having to bind broken bones and check over head wounds to see if they needed surgery, and to use the regenerator on wounds they deemed 'bad enough' to make use of it's limited power supply. To further decide who would bleed out if it wasn't used once Nighlight sent them their way… xe didn't envy them.
Eventually the flood of wounded began to slow, and Nightlight moved on to help people bind up wounds with the stock of bandages that had been taken out of the storage rooms. Some of them were mud-spattered from where it had broken through the wall, and someone had set up a pot of boiling water to clean them for use.
Eventually, the battery on the regenerator wore out, and Corazon joined xem and the others checking and bandaging people up with more basic equipment. Those in desperate need of surgery had been loaded up into the flyer, and now it was those with less mortal injuries.
'Less mortal' however was small comfort for them, as they cried in pain at the injuries, waiting for their turn on the flyer. Nightlight, after the last of the bandages had been applied, did xir best to sit and talk to people waiting, distracting them through the pain. Corazon joined xem, doing their best to tell tall tales or ask people about other things, taking their minds of the mudslides.
It was draining work, but soon others from other villages came in and all but kicked them out to go rest. Nightlight slithered away, surprised at how drained xe felt, and glanced at Corazon who seemed equally wilted.
"Perks of being a doctor, huh?" xe tried to joke, but it fell flat.
Still Corazon tried to quirk their mouth into a smile. "Yeah."
They all but dragged themselves to the food tent that had been set up, and gulped down food without really tasting it. It was hard to enjoy it while worrying about those they had sent off in the flyer and those still waiting on the ground…
Eventually, someone took pity on them and gave them the numbers. They were not as good as Corazon and Nightlight had hoped, but it was still closure.
Maybe, at last, they could sleep now…
