Shenzi, a tall, robust-shouldered tsabhua, paved her own path through the dimly-lit alleyways. The city loomed over her, the buildings as steep and impeding as giants and their windows forming the glowing eyes. A criss-crossing of pipes weakly coughed steam at her, and she lowered her head to avoid it. It was dark, too dark to see more than a few feet in front of her and those weak, unnatural glows from fires. Two figures rushed around the corner, their golden pelts a blur as they smacked into the black tsabhua.
"I-I do apologize, miss!" The first, an iridescent kukri, stood up and swiftly dipped his bowler cap to her. He wore a whistle between his lips, and carried a long pole on his back–one that was attached to a slim noose of sorts. "Arr!" Growled the smaller one ferociously–a gacha-imp with a fur like ginger and slate paint-splattered between each other. He smacked at the tsabhua viciously with a net–once, twice. When she grabbed it and snarled with half a mind to snap it, he finally hesitated into a whimper. "What kind of hooligans are you?"
"Why, we're with the catchers!" Dorian pleaded, raising his black paws to try to prevent conflict between the two. "We're just trying to sort-out some miscreants, you know! A few pests here and there who don't belong in the city at all, and will be better out there than in here!" He used his outstretched paws to depict the size of a small creature–a toy imp. "Oh, I know those!" Shenzi recognized, thinking that he must've meant a huldah–their term for the mousey vermin that haunted the sewers. "Well, you're too big to catch!" Atlas, the imp, complained as he puffed up his chest. "So I say, we've got work to do, so either join us or beat it!"
"You're one to talk!" Shenzi snarled, showing her pointy teeth to the imp in a way that quite said, I'm much larger than you are! "It's quite a nuisance, miss," Dorian pleaded, "We were following the skitters of one of them, it leapt off that way!" He gestured down a long, even-blacker alleyway. "Ignore my rude companion, please–we really could use your help!" As Shenzi stared into the darkness, she almost thought this was a trap–a way of stealing from an unknowing visitor–until she saw the glint of eyes staring back at them. And another, and another, until she couldn't count the pairs.
"That's it!" Atlas howled, "I'm gonna catch 'em!" Dorian did something fully unexpected–he flipped open a mechanical device from his pocket. It shot out a beam of light like no other, a circle that fell upon the dumpster. Shenzi felt her heart drop as suddenly–nothing was there, other than a banana peel and a piece of trash hiding underneath the stinking bin. "Not again!" The standard imp howled, sulking. "We'll have to keep looking," Dorian gave a deep sigh, as if they had been doing this all night. (Hint: They had.) Shenzi gave a huff of determination. "Well, count me in! Together, we'll be catchers!"
